Insurance & Schemes

Coverage exists. Knowing how to use it is the skill.

CGHS, ECHS, corporate TPA plans and Ayushman Bharat each have distinct rules. This page explains the differences and turns them into a claim path you can actually follow.

The coverage landscape

CGHS

For eligible central-government employees, pensioners and families. Covers transplant, dialysis and medicines under CGHS packages at empanelled hospitals — with referral and pre-authorisation rules that must be followed exactly.

ECHS

For serving and retired armed-forces personnel and dependants. Its own empanelment and claim processes; entitlement is defined by rank/service rules, not by general private-insurance logic.

Corporate TPA plans

Employer group policies administered by TPAs. Vary by insurer and employer. Most cover transplant within hospitalisation limits; waiting periods and sum-insured caps matter. The policy document is the truth.

Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY)

Up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for eligible families in participating states. Transplant and dialysis are covered under scheme packages, with state-level rules changing over time. Always verify eligibility live.

The five-step claim path

  1. 1Collect your scheme documents — CGHS card/ECHS card/corporate policy, ID, and your latest prescriptions.
  2. 2Get a written estimate from the hospital covering surgery, donor work-up, and the first year of medicines.
  3. 3Confirm empanelment and coverage in writing before admission — using your specific card/policy details.
  4. 4Complete pre-authorisation for any cashless claim before admission, not after.
  5. 5Keep every bill, report and discharge summary; the only failures that are hard to recover from are paperwork failures.

Questions about coverage

How do I confirm a hospital is CGHS-empanelled?+

Use the CGHS empanelled hospital list for your city or ask the hospital to confirm in writing using your CGHS card details. Empanelment changes and is rate-and-city specific — never assume from a website claim.

Does CGHS cover transplant medicines after discharge?+

CGHS covers immunosuppressant medicines under its own rate-list rules for eligible beneficiaries. The precise items and approvals should be confirmed with the CGHS wellness centre before you rely on them.

Is ECHS coverage the same as CGHS?+

ECHS serves armed-forces personnel and families with its own empanelment and approval process. The two schemes differ in lists, entitlements and procedures — always follow your own scheme's rules.

What do corporate TPA plans cover for kidney care?+

Corporare group policies through TPAs vary by employer and insurer. Most cover transplant and dialysis within their hospitalisation limits, with waiting periods for pre-existing conditions. Your policy document is the truth.

Does Ayushman Bharat cover transplant?+

Yes, within the scheme's rules and beneficiary eligibility, at participating hospitals in participating states. States adjust packages over time, so verify your e-card's eligibility before admission.

Cashless or reimbursement — which should I choose?+

Cashless avoids paying upfront, which is a huge advantage for transplant. It requires pre-authorisation before admission. Reimbursement works if your hospital is not on the cashless list. Confirm the path in writing, in advance.
